12/6/2016 0 Comments December 6, 2016Hey there folks! For my first blog post I thought I share a story with you about an experience my family had that wasn’t exactly perfect. I learned many valuable lessons through the process and I would love to share them with you. With that said, here it goes...
So this past Spring Break, my family ventured out to Breckenridge, Colorado for a family ski trip. To say the least, this trip was highly anticipated. We planned every detail and were determined to have the perfect trip. However, little did we know how difficult it would prove to get out there. First things first, my parents put me on skis when I was 3 years, so I’ve been skiing for as long as I can remember. Weekend trips to the slopes, middle school ski team, and loads of hot chocolate have decorated my childhood. However, one thing was missing...the notorious trip out west. My brother and I had been begging to go for years, but the answer was always the same. “Not this year honey, but next year! We promise!” So as you could guess, I was extremely excited when I found out we were finally going for Spring Break. For weeks I gathered all my gear, researched the best places to eat, looked at maps, and created many lists to double check that I wouldn't forget anything. The day finally came, and word had it that Colorado was getting hit with a HUGE snowstorm. The Denver airport hadn't shut down in 10 years, so naturally that was the last thing on my mind, I was too busy thinking about all the snow we were about to get to go ski in. But, the Denver airport did just that. It shut down for the first time in 10 years. Being the optimist that I am, I immediately starting looking for other flights. Nothing. All of the sudden my plans were disappearing into thin air. Might I add that this all happened on our way to the airport. Yep, we were that close to making it… Nonetheless, my parents spent the next hours running through the Charlotte airport trying to figure out a way to get us there. Our best bet was a flight the next morning into Omaha, where we would then have to drive 10 hours to get to Breckenridge. And that’s exactly what we did. I learned multiple things from that trip. I learned that you don't have to abandon your plans just because your first try didn't work out. What would have happened if we hadn't looked for another way out west? We never would have had the awesome trip that we did. I learned that it’s not an adventure until something goes wrong. After confirming our flight to Omaha the next morning, my dad was driving us to the hotel we were staying that night. He accidently missed the turn and had to do a U-turn. My 5 year old sister then proceed to squeal in her little voice, “U-TURN!!” Struck with the irony of that phrase at the moment, we all erupted into laughter. U-Turn certainly seemed to describe our experience extremely well. As a result, “U-Turn” became our catchphrase the entire week. I learned that much of Nebraska looks exactly the same. Every last 389th mile of it that we drove. (Lots and lots of grass, cows, and corn fields for those of you wondering) And lastly, I learned that a positive attitude goes a long way. It would be so easy to get frustrated at the situation we were put in, especially after how perfectly we planned the trip. But in the long run, we can only control so much. Instead of thinking how everything has gone wrong, think of how everything has gone right. I still got to go on my ski trip. You’ll still get a good grade in that class after a hard test. You’ll still be able to play that sport even if you didn't make the team. You’ll still be able to see the good in every situation, even if it seems like everything is trying to get you to focus on the bad. I truly believe that my family's positive attitude despite a sticky situation is what turned our trip around. We went on to have an amazing trip, one I would remember forever and as crazy as it seems, I wouldn't change a single thing about our adventure.

Before you read further, I think it’s a good idea for you to know a little more about me. First, I’m the oldest of 4 kids in our family. Henceforth, I’m the momma bear of the kids. Second, my parents have lived here in Asheville all their lives, and have raised us to participate in all the activities that Asheville is well known for, like hiking, skiing, and mountain biking. And third, I’m always on the go. The more I think about it, I can’t remember the last weekend I didn’t have anything going on. Most of the time, soccer keeps me on the run, and when it’s not that, my other siblings provide some sort of other event to attend. With that said, you can conclude that my life holds more than a few chaotic, stressful, wonderful, laughable moments. This blog will explore all of those “what in the world” moments, because over the years I’ve discovered that those moments that may seem small at first, can hold some amazing lessons inside of them. What I really hope this blog does, is create a place where I can share a little bit of my family, awkward moments, and everything in between. Hopefully you can walk away after reading a post with a little knowledge of how I deal with everyday life and find the hidden lessons buried in all that happens to me. And maybe if I’m lucky, you’ll be able to say, “Yep. Caroline’s got a life not too different from mine.” |
