Cheer Tryouts

For cheerleaders, the end of the school year brings anticipation of getting ready for the next season of cheer. Tryouts this year will be held June 10 and 12.
The first day of tryouts consists of practicing stunts with the other girls and learning all of the necessary information. On the final day, athletes have a routine which they perform in front of the coaches and demonstrate the skills that they learned the previous day.
“Tryouts are very nerve wracking but also exciting. And once you're finished, it’s really fun,” sophomore Davie Pyle said.
To help the athletes prepare for their tryout, ‘open gyms’ were held over two weeks during the last week of April and the first week of May. These workshops provided cheerleaders with the opportunity to meet other newcomers and learn what the team will look like next season. Along with this, girls who attended the workouts were able to familiarize themselves with the tryout cheer that they will be performing on June 12.
“Going in front of the coaches is one of the hardest things because there's so much pressure. I have to make sure that I’m doing everything I can to be able to make the team,” Pyle said.
For some, like rising freshman Ally Cady, the open gyms have provided relief.
“The open gyms have been helpful because it has given us a chance to have extra practice before tryouts. We have also gotten to meet the coaches a get a head start on some of the things we will need to try out,” Cady said.
The Roberson cheer squad is a seven-time state championship winning program.
“TC cheer has had a very good reputation for being great at both games and competitions. Not only are the cheerleaders good at what they do, but they have high expectations of good behavior,” Cady said.
Despite the nerves of completing tryouts, overall, cheerleaders are looking forward to this upcoming season.
“I’m really excited to try out in less than a month. Being a Roberson cheerleader [would mean] I get to represent my school doing what I love,” Cady said.
